The Prime Minister the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull’s pitch to get economic reform back on the agenda as Parliament resumes reflects the importance of reform to Australia’s continued prosperity.
CEDA’s 1992 Strategic Issues Forum report, Microeconomic reform and business efficiency, assessed the microeconomic reforms introduced in the mid-1980s which were aimed at improving productivity and business efficiency.
The report concluded that more had to be done as Australia was still lagging behind in global productivity performance. It recommended that traditional market structures and regulatory approaches, particularly in the services sector, be reassessed and competition encouraged, an issue that is still largely relevant today.
